What is multi-threading in sales?

Multi-threading in sales is the practice of building relationships with several stakeholders in a buying organization so that a deal does not depend on a single contact.

How multi-threading works

A B2B purchase usually involves more than one person. A single-threaded deal runs entirely through one contact. If that person leaves, goes quiet or lacks authority, the deal stalls.

Multi-threading means identifying the other people involved and giving each a reason to engage:

  • The champion who wants the change
  • The economic buyer who approves the spend
  • Users who will work with the product
  • Technical, legal and security reviewers who can block it

The goal is not to go around your champion. Ask them who else needs to be involved and work with them to bring those people in.

A hypothetical example

This is a hypothetical example. A rep at Acme Example Software has one contact at Sample Street Logistics, an operations manager. The rep asks who signs off on budget and who reviews security. The manager introduces the finance director and the IT lead. The rep presents pricing with finance on the call and sends IT the security documents. When the operations manager goes on leave, the deal keeps moving.

How it shows up on a sales call

The pricing call is a natural moment to widen the group, because finance and the final approver care most about the numbers. Presenting the quote live with them present means their questions are answered once, in front of everyone.

Afterward, give every stakeholder one place to find the materials. A deal room does this, and a shared mutual action plan gives each person named steps. When several people must sign, a signing order keeps the last step organized.

What is a single-threaded deal?

A deal in which the seller has a relationship with only one person at the buying organization. It is fragile because everything depends on that contact.

How many contacts should a deal have?

There is no fixed number. Aim to know everyone who uses, approves, reviews or signs the purchase.
